Mission San Juan Capistrano

Founded 1731

Mission San Juan Capistrano, originally established in East Texas, was relocated to San Antonio in 1731. It is the closest mission to the San Antonio River which provided all the missions with water through a series of acequias, or water canals, that were constructed to irrigate their crops. These historic acequias are still visible today and actively used at Mission San Juan, where the fields continue to be nourished by an acequia system that has been in operation since the eighteenth century.
